In the wake of hurricanes that devastated Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean islands, people around the world have stepped up during a time when victims of these storms need it the most. This past Tuesday, September 12, “Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief” aired on various TV networks and drew more than 15 million viewers.
Star power was on display in a major way for this event. Drake, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Nicki Minaj, Jamie Foxx, Pharrell, Oprah, Justin Bieber, Diddy, Will Smith, Usher, and so many more were there to do their part in raising money and awareness.
Drake speaks on what many of us are thinking as of late, “These days it seems as if one issue is ending, another is beginning, and I know it can be extremely overwhelming.” Every week it seems as though there is a new battle to be fought, but it is important that as a society we remain “hand in hand” and continue to put our best foot forward.
Beyonce had a lot to say in regards to the country’s current climate, stating that it’s “a time where it’s impossible to watch the news without seeing violence or racism in this country.” She continues on to add a sentiment that many have expressed in the past weeks, “Seeing everyone of different racial, social, and religious backgrounds put their own lives at risk to help each other survive restored my faith in humanity.”
With musical performances from the likes of Usher, Blake Shelton, Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews and more, everybody did their part in making sure that the telethon was a complete success.
People calling in and donating from around the world helped raise more than $44 million for relief efforts, including a $5 million donation from Apple.
